ERASMUS INTENSIVE LANGUAGE COURSE (EILC) SUMMER 2011

Frederick University invites Erasmus students to study Modern Greek language and culture!
EILC - Erasmus Intensive Greek Language Course will be held at Frederick University (Nicosia campus only) from the 29th of August, 2011 till the 23th of September, 2011 before the Fall semester 2011/2012.
The students will learn to speak Modern Greek and explore the rich culture of Cyprus through conversational exercises that will help them to develop their fluency. All the students will have the opportunity to enrich their vocabulary in special scientific areas according to their studies having a 5 hour special program-GSP (Greek for Special Purpose).
Objectives of the course
The EILC in the Modern Greek language aims to provide to interested students and teachers the basics of the Greek Language, both in oral and written form. More specifically, at the end of the course the students will be able to read, comprehend and produce correctly small texts on simple situations of everyday life.
More specifically, they will be able to:
  • understand frequently used phrases and expressions related to areas of immediate personal relevance (e.g. basic personal and family information, shopping, local area, employment)
  • communicate in simple tasks requiring exchange of information on familiar and routine topics
  • describe in simple terms aspects of their life, of the immediate environment as well as matters of importance
They will acquire basic notions of the Greek Alphabet, declension of nouns, adjectives and pronouns (personal, possessive, negative etc) verbs and main tenses (present, past, future, perfect an imperfect) and make comparisons. They will also be able to produce basic types of sentences (affirmation, negation, etc.), provide simple information about oneself and others, and be able to express opinion, feelings and preferences
The final aim of this project is not only to teach Modern Greek to interested students and teachers, but also to immerse Erasmus students in the Greek- Cypriot culture and every day way of living. This will be accomplished by organizing language groups, cultural activities in an effort to exchange ideas and experiences in an intercultural dialogue between local and Erasmus incoming students. Erasmus students come to Cyprus to learn about this country’s language and culture, but we will do the best we can to engage Cypriot students in the learning process of intercultural skills and communication.
